Should you do DTS?
In my experience, the answer to this question is always yes. Giving up five months of your life is a big decision to make, we recognize and understand that. All of our staff made the choice to say yes at one point or another along their journey to YWAM Denver, and we are here to help you. My hope is that this little guide can give you more of an insight into how important and incredibly special it is to give up your time to discover who God is and who He’s created you to be.
You want to see more of the world.
Arguably one of most exciting pieces of YWAM is the aspect of travel. It’s a chance for you to step out of your comfort zone and experience life as you’ve never seen it, whether that is other parts of America or the world.
YWAM Denver is located at the base of some of America’s most beautiful mountains, The Rockies, while also being close to the “mile high city”, Denver. This base alone is immersed in adventure for all those seeking beautiful outdoor scenery, as well as balancing rich city life for all types. When I came out to Denver for my DTS I was a city girl through and through, I love the hustle and bustle of people and the variety of personalities and cultures I can find. After my DTS was over I found an appreciation for the mountains like I never knew possible; God taught me so much about His greatness and steadiness through the stunning views.
Diverse culture intrigues you.
Whether it’s because of curiosity or perhaps even a little fear, experiencing cultures outside your own is so important in defining the way you view God, yourself and others. How can you understand who God is if you don’t know the people He’s created?
The DTS outreach portion is an incredible chance to increase in knowledge and experience of the world around you: I believe that travel is so important to one’s own life experience and growth. Through travelling to different countries, some very poor and others middle class, God strips you of your selfishness and you learn to have an understanding and love for His people. From the warm smile of a Thai man to a Costa Rican child bouncing around, your love grows deeper.
You’re searching for meaning.
Many people reach a point in their life where they need a change; I know I did. You’re looking for meaning and new community — a clean slate perhaps? DTS is the place for you. You trade comfortability for growth, old views of God for new. For the last 35 years, students have been coming to YWAM Denver for just five months, fulfilling that need for change. Three years ago I showed up here not understanding the transformation I was about to go through, and the Jesus I was about to encounter; I’ll never be the same and neither will you.
